Eliezer Zambrano’s single scored Alberto Robles with the go-ahead run in the top of the 12thinning, and the Augusta GreenJackets went on to a 2-1 win over the Lexington Legends Wednesday. The victory gives first-place Augusta a two and one-half game lead over the Legends in the South Atlantic League Southern Division.
Each team scored a run in the seventh inning. In the top of the seventh, singles by Mitch Delfino and Joey Rapp, a sacrifice bunt by Zambrano and a sacrifice fly by Chuckie Jones produced a run for Augusta.
The Legends matched it in the bottom half on a one-out double by Mark Threlkeld and singles by Bubba Starling and Hunter Dozier.
Robles led off the 12th with a single and advanced to second as Delfino grounded out. Joey Rapp struck out, but Zambrano lined a single to center, and Robles beat the throw home with the deciding run.
Augusta pitchers struck out 20 batters. Starter Kendry Flores fanned 15 and walked none in seven innings.
Mason McVay (3-4), who entered the game in the 11th, got the win. Johnny Walter (1-1) took the loss. He pitched the 11th and 12th innings, and the run scored by Augusta in the 12th was the first given up by Walter in 21 and two-thirds innings for the Legends this season.
Each team has won one game in the current series, which concludes Thursday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
