The University of the Cumberlands (UC) football team is coming off a very impressive 41-10 victory over the Cumberland University Bulldogs. The Patriots were led by incredible performances by their defenses and their special teams. Two players were recognized this week by the Mid-South Conference (MSC) for their effort on those two phases of the game.
Weston Hazelhurst (Clinton, TN) and Albert Huntley (Mableton, GA) were named MSC Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week. This is the first time this year for both of these players, and the second consecutive week a Patriot has been chosen as a MSC Player of the Week.
Hazlehurst finished with 12 tackles and 1-1/2 sacks during the Patriots’ 41-10 win over Cumberland University to earn Mid-South Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
The Clinton, Tenn., senior linebacker, helped the Cumberlands’ defense limit the No. 25-ranked Bulldogs to 174 total yards of offense, including just 53 yards on the ground. Hazlehurst added a forced fumble and a fumble recovery to his stat line during the win.
Hazlehurst ranks sixth in Mid-South and 21st in the NAIA in tackles for a loss (3.0). He is seventh in sacks (1.5) and eighth in both tackles per game (8.0) and sacks per game (0.8) in the MSC.
Huntley scored a touchdown on his only kickoff return of the game in Cumberlands’ win to earn MSC Special Teams Player of the Week.
The Mableton, Ga. senior scampered 95 yards for his first touchdown of the season. Huntley also contributed to the Patriots’ special teams with a blocked punt that was scooped up and returned for a touchdown by teammate Willie Gibson.
Huntley’s 95 kickoff return yards is seventh most in the Mid-South this season. He also ranks eighth in the conference with 13 punt return yards.
No. 8-ranked Cumberlands improves to 2-0 on the season and remains tied atop the Mid-South East Division standings at 1-0.
Weston, Albert, and their teammates must now prepare for their biggest test yet as they will travel to Jackson, MS to take on the Belhaven University Blazers. The Patriots are set to kickoff with the Blazers at 7:00 pm eastern standard time.
