The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Archery program was back in action this past weekend as they traveled to Columbia, MO to participate in the 3D US Intercollegiate Archery Championships. After a great showing at the home tournament in September, the archers were hoping to have their best shooting in from of them. The Patriots competed against teams from 16 different schools from across the country.
The Patriots competed in the 3-day tournament in 6 different events: Men’s Bowhunter, Women’s Bowhunter, Men’s Compound, Women’s Compound, Men’s Recurve, and Women’s Recurve.
In the Men’s Bowhunter class, the Patriots were represented well as this was the largest division at the event with 35 archers competing. Dylan Martin (Keavy, KY) ended the event in 7th place as he shot a day one total of 184 and a second day total of 191 to end the event with 375 total score. Caleb Kirby (London, KY) finished 10th with a day one score of 179 and day two score of 184 to finish with a 363 total. Aaron Cook (Stanford, KY) finished the tournament in 13th place with a total score of 352 (170/182). Hunter Rickard (Henderson, KY) ended the event in 16th place with a total score of 349 (188/161). Patriot Justin Bowling (London, KY) tied for 19th place as he shot a day one 150 and day two 192 for a total of 342.
In the Women’s Bowhunter class, the Patriot ladies had a fantastic finish as 6 archers finished in the Top-10. Lakin Crum (Catlettsburg, KY) won this division finishing 1st with a day one score of 170, and rounding out day two with a 171 for a total of 341. Kristen Swords (Pontotoc, MS) and Madeline Brown (Boonville, IN) tied for 2nd place but faced off in a “sudden death” type match-up where each archer had one arrow to shoot and had to judge the distance as it was unknown. The highest score out of the two received the higher place, which was Swords, placing Brown in 3rd. Briana Messmer (Cadiz, KY) placed 5th with a day one score of 149 and improving her shot by 25 points shooting a 174 on day two for a total score of 323. Cheyenne Miller (London, KY) placed 7th in the division shooting 156/153 for a total score of 309.
In the Men’s Compound division, five Patriots placed. Cody Kirby (London, KY) earned a 4th place finish as he shot a 1st round 193 and a 2nd round 196 to finish with a 389, just 16 points behind first place. Ryan Long (Richmond, KY) finished in 6th, just 5 points behind Kirby with a total score of 384, shooting a 191 in round one and a 193 in round two. Aaron Daniels (Henderson, KY) shot a 174 in round one, and improved his score by 26 points, shooting a 200 in round two for a total of 374 and landing him in 11th place. Korey Snyder (London, KY) shot a 175 in round one improving his round two score to a 193 giving a total of 368 and putting him in 15th place. Nathan Vaughn (Henderson, KY) rounded out the Patriots as he took 18th place shooting a 177/180 giving him a total score of 357.
In the Women’s Compound division, Hannah Blevins (Eubank, KY) had a tremendous turnaround from day one as she shot a 1st day 155, but rebounded with a 2nd day 198 to finish at 353 and in 4th place. Haley Haygood (Liberty, MS) finished in 7th place with a round one score of 134, improving greatly in round two with a score of 175 for a total of 309. Amber Abate (Cadiz, KY) rounded out the division in 10th place, shooting a total of 165.
The Women’s Recurve division was represented by Lacey Reliford (Somerset, KY) as she earned a 2nd place finish scoring a 66 in round one and a 110 in round two for a total of 176.
In team rounds, the top three shooters in each gender/division compete. UC placed 3rd out of 7 teams in the Men’s Bowhunter division as the trio of Hunter Rickard, Caleb Kirby, and Dylan Martin competed. In the Women’s Bowhunter division, Lakin Crum, Kristen Swords, and Madeline Brown competed and placed 2nd out of 3 teams. In the Men’s Compound division, UC placed 2nd out of 6 teams as Ryan Long, Korey Snyder, and Nathan Vaughn competed. UC’s Women’s Compound team consisting of Hannah Blevins, Amber Abate, and Haley Haygood placed 1st in their team division.
In the mixed divisions, the top male and female from their division compete as a team. For the Bowhunter division, Lakin Crum and Hunter Rickard competed and placed 2nd. For the Compound division, Ryan Long and Amber Abate competed and finished in 2nd place after a “sudden death” shoot off again Michigan State.
This event concluded the fall season and now the team is preparing for the spring season. The next tournament will take place on February 28th-March 2nd, 2014 as the archers will travel to Statesboro, GA to participate in the Collegiate Indoor Nationals.
